Tales of the squid: About Me

Hello, my Squids!

I'm the Prize Winning Squid - a freelance illustrator, creator, and storyteller. Originally born in Mississippi, I bounced around as a kid and lived in Japan, Texas, and eventually Ohio. I'm currently in West Virginia with my family, living, loving, and growing.

At heart, I'm a storyteller. I love creating new characters, telling endearing stories, and crafting worlds. My journeys have led me down the path of novel writing, music production, and drawing. Art has always been at the center of everything I do. I drew constantly as a kid, even creating comic books full of hundreds of on-going storylines. While I put the pencil down in favor of other creative pursuits for several decades, I have returned to it.

I am heavily influenced by old anime, such as Ghost in the Shell, Iria: Zeiram, and Battle Angel Alita and the powerful, deep, identifiable women in them. Grit and attitude have always been exciting and fascinating to me. I also fell in love with "shiny" art styles, that used a lot of light to simulate PVC, latex, and other glossy materials. I want to reflect this in my work.

Currently, I am building a portfolio of engaging original characters, specifically those from my Taliah comic series (READ HERE or on GlobalComix or Webtoon) and Champions of Digitalia (a music and novel series I created). I'm chipping away at producing my first comics in these different worlds. At the same time, I produce fun illustrations, have been dabbling in learning animation, and more.

As someone who is self-taught, I'm immensely grateful for all of the tutorials, comments, lessons, and encouragement other artists and enjoyers of art have given me. I believe that we all have a gift in us that just needs to be nurtured and there's no timeline for when that will happen. I hope to continue making art well into my twilight years but I hope even more that anything I've created has made others happy or sparked inspiration.

Thanks for reading my little ramble. Feel free to join my Patreon for work in progress of my comics and more. I look forward to hearing from you, whatever means that may take. Take care, my Squids. I love you.
